The colonists believed that the King was abusing his power. Great Britain levied huge taxes against the colonies without the colonists consent. They had no representatives in Parliament, therefore they had no voice. That is how the statement "No taxation without representation" came to be.

The American Revolution created the first true democracy. The Colonists gained these ideas about democracy due to Enlightenment thinkers; these include: John Locke, Montesquieu, and Rousseau. John Locke had the idea of natural rights. These are rights people had from birth. Life, liberty, and property. Under the rule of Great Britain the colonists did not have a say in their government.
